On March 26, 2008 -- Ex-con rapper Cavlar, who had just begun to claw his way to success with his own music and "Step Up Your Game" DVDs featuring big-name stars, was gunned down yesterday on a Brooklyn street as he stepped out of his Jaguar to meet a promoter.
The rapper and father of three, whose real name is Leval Lyde, was hit by a single shot to the chest on Fulton Street at 4:49 a.m. as his cousin watched in horror.
The shooting came after Lyde, 36, argued with the gunman and two of the killer's pals - all of whom fled.
"I saw a lady running [and] came outside and she said, 'They're killing each over there!' " said store owner Amilcar Salvador, 40.
An uncle, Clarence Lamb, was stunned at the "senseless death."
"Young people killing each other . . . is fruitless," he said. "It's crazy, just crazy."
Police were looking into whether the bloodshed might have been rap-related.
A cousin who asked not to be identified, said Lyde was "a kind person, a loving person."
On hip-hop Web sites, Cavlar was known for his association with Earthquake Camp Records and the "Step Your Game Up" DVDs, which feature top stars, interviews and videos.
In 2004, he toured with stars Lil Jon and the Ying Yang Twins, and had been featured on Hot 97's DJ Kay Slay Drama Hour and WBLS' Wendy Williams Show.
According to the record label, he "honed his writing and rapping skills while serving time in New York's Arthur Kill Correctional Facility" - which he said helped steer him to a music career.

If you don’t know Roccett yet, the time is now. The west coast rapper, who is co-signed by Young Jeezy, is taking Carson, California on his back and taking the industry over. The CTE artist has pushed music to the limits with his latest track and mixtapes. The young MC has already been featured in some of the industry’s most powerful publications and continues no let up as he grips the industry in a head lock.
About Roccett Born Jerome Rockett in 1983, and raised in the rugged streets of Carson, Calif., the 24-year-old MC learned about hustling and working hard early on. The rough surroundings of crime and gang life in Carson molded Roccett into a strong individual, and gave him the necessary experience to share the struggles of what many people face. After his initial dream of a basketball career didn't materialize, he discovered he had a passion for hip-hop at the age of 16. With his eyes clearly set on his new goal, he began laying out the foundation for his success by performing shows throughout Los Angeles.
Coming from the west coast, a region that has produced stars like Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, N.W.A and many more, and famous for its unique lifestyle, Roccett embodies what many west coast rap fans love, while at the same time displaying a versatility that makes him appealing to hip-hop fans across the world.
His charisma and strong stage presence, combined with his ability to craft stories about a wide array of subjects earned the young rapper the respect of fans and caused the industry to take notice.
His talent and drive caught the attention of Green Up Entertainment in 2004, and his partnership with the company, which has worked with notables like Usher and Tupac, has produced a sizable buzz. Roccett has worked with established stars like Young Jeezy, Fabolous, Killer Mike, Knoc'turn'al and other rising rappers like Bishop Lamont and Spider Loc early on in his career. With the backing of major and minor artists alike, it is a sure bet that Roccett has the spark and energy the game has been missing.

It has just been announced on 93.9 WKYS that DC-area hip-hop artist, Wale, has signed with Interscope Records in a joint venture deal with three-time Grammy award winning producer Mark Ronson's Allido Records.
Wale, 23, has seen a tremendous amount of success for an unsigned hip hop artist over the past year, gracing the covers of URB and DNR magazines, doing remixes for Justice, Chris Brown and MIA, performing at the MTV Video Music Awards, song licenses with Nike, Entourage and MTV and a growing internet buzz surrounding his most recent mixtape 100 Miles and Running and his upcoming Seinfeld-inspired project The Mixtape About Nothing. Entertainment Weekly recently reported that the mixtape features a skit from Seinfeld star Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
Wale signed a production deal with DJ-turned-producer Mark Ronson, whose resume includes Ghostface Killah, Saigon, Rhymefest, Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen and Christina Aguilera, in June of 2007 after impressing him on Ronson's European tour. Following an intense, six-month bidding war, Wale signed to a joint venture between Allido Records and Interscope, saying Jimmy Iovine, Luke Wood and the whole Interscope staff understood his vision better than anyone else.
"Look at their track record," said Wale via phone on his way to perform at a Justice concert in DC. "Dre, Eminem, 50, Pharrell, Timbaland, Black Eyed Peas, Soulja Boy…the list goes on."
"This is the best possible situation we could ask for," says Daniel Weisman, Wale's manager. "We waited and kept grinding until someone came with something we felt reflected the work we've put in. Interscope got it."
Mark Ronson will executive produce Wale's untitled debut album and contribute production to the project due out in fall. Other tentative contributors include past Wale-collaborators Osinachi ("Nike Boots") and Best Kept Secret ("Back In The Go Go"), along with Just Blaze, Pharrell, Kanye West, 9th Wonder, Justice and DJ Toomp.
Allido Records is a New York City-based label founded in 2004 by Mark Ronson and former manager, Rich Kleiman, Mark's co-manager. Allido Records has put out releases by Rhymefest and Daniel Merrieather through J Records, and by Mark Ronson through RCA. Wale's album will be the first release through their new joint venture deal with Interscope.

The Game checked into jail Sunday night at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles, according to TMZ.com. The rapper is set to serve a 60-day jail sentence after pleading no contest to a felony charge of possession of a firearm in a school zone. According to various reports, he'll be segregated from the general population..
The charge stems from an altercation at the Rita Walters Educational Learning Complex in South L.A.. Prosecutors allege Game pulled a gun from his car and threatened to shoot an opposing player in a basketball game.
Despite the no contest plead, Game maintained his innocence in a recent interview with Monsta Magazine.
"The crazy part about this is that I've had guns before in my life," Game told Monsta. "But this time, I didn't have a gun. And because one person said I had a gun and coaxed his homies into saying that I had a gun, I'm in a predicament where I'm asking, 'Do I want to spend another million dollars to fight this trial, so who knows what jury's gonna come in and say I'm guilty? Or do I want to save my money, go sit down for four months and accept this felony they're trying to give me for no reason.'"
