Def Jam exec dies from self-inflicted gunshot

Sunday, November 02, 2008

The executive who succeeded Jay-Z as the head of hip-hop music label Def Jam Recordings died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound near Atlanta, police said Sunday.

Executive vice president Shakir Stewart, 34, died on Saturday, his New York-based label said in a statement.

Stewart was found Saturday afternoon in the bathroom of his home in the Atlanta suburb of Marietta, Cobb County police spokeswoman Cassie Reece said Sunday. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Police described the shooting as self-inflicted and would not say who discovered Stewart.

Stewart signed such artists as Rick Ross and Young Jeezy to

the label before being named in June to the post once filled by Jay-Z.

The Oakland, Calif., native came to Atlanta to attend Morehouse College, where he graduated in 1996, his label said in an announcement for his promotion in June.

He previously worked with the Hitco publishing company, where he signed R&B star Beyonce, and Arista Records, where he signed R&B star Ciara.

Christopher Hicks, a friend of 18 years and fellow music executive, last spoke with Stewart about a week ago.

"Whatever happened over the past 24 hours is not a testament to who we all know," Hicks told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Sunday. "He was a one-of-a-kind individual. If you looked on his Blackberry (stamp) it said 'One of one.'"

Isaac Hayes R.I.P.

Another sad day in the Entertainment industry.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Oscar-winning soul singer Isaac Hayes died in Memphis on Sunday, aged 65, his friend and former manager Onzie Horne said.

Horne told Reuters that he had spoken to Hayes’ wife, who confirmed that Hayes was found unconscious at his home, and rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Hayes, a flamboyant, deep-voiced performer, won an Academy Award for “Theme from ‘Shaft.’” Along with David Porter, he also co-wrote soul classics for Sam and Dave, such as “Soul Man” and “When Something is Wrong With My Baby.”

He may be better known to younger fans for supplying the voice of Chef on the hit cartoon series “South Park.”

Bernie Mac R.I.P.

Actor/comedian Bernie Mac passed away yesterday morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital."

The comedian was first hospitalized with the illness back on Aug. 1 and was initially said to be "responding well" to treatment.

While Mac also suffered from sarcoidosis, an autoimmune disorder that causes inflammation in the lungs, his battle with pneumonia was not said to be connected with the disease.

Sean Bell R.I.P.

Three detectives were found not guilty Friday morning on all charges in the shooting death of Sean Bell, who died in a hail of 50 police bullets outside a club in Jamaica, Queens.

During the 26 days of testimony, the prosecution sought to show, with an array of 50 witnesses, that the shooting was the act of a frightened, even enraged group of disorganized police officers who began their shift that night hoping to arrest a prostitute or two and, in suspecting Mr. Bell and his friends of possessing a gun, quickly got in over their heads.

R.I.P. Cavlar

On March 26, 2008 -- Ex-con rapper Cavlar, who had just begun to claw his way to success with his own music and "Step Up Your Game" DVDs featuring big-name stars, was gunned down yesterday on a Brooklyn street as he stepped out of his Jaguar to meet a promoter.

The rapper and father of three, whose real name is Leval Lyde, was hit by a single shot to the chest on Fulton Street at 4:49 a.m. as his cousin watched in horror.

The shooting came after Lyde, 36, argued with the gunman and two of the killer's pals - all of whom fled.

"I saw a lady running [and] came outside and she said, 'They're killing each over there!' " said store owner Amilcar Salvador, 40.

An uncle, Clarence Lamb, was stunned at the "senseless death."

"Young people killing each other . . . is fruitless," he said. "It's crazy, just crazy."

Police were looking into whether the bloodshed might have been rap-related.

A cousin who asked not to be identified, said Lyde was "a kind person, a loving person."

On hip-hop Web sites, Cavlar was known for his association with Earthquake Camp Records and the "Step Your Game Up" DVDs, which feature top stars, interviews and videos.

In 2004, he toured with stars Lil Jon and the Ying Yang Twins, and had been featured on Hot 97's DJ Kay Slay Drama Hour and WBLS' Wendy Williams Show.

According to the record label, he "honed his writing and rapping skills while serving time in New York's Arthur Kill Correctional Facility" - which he said helped steer him to a music career.
